An early 2000s family home was ready for a transformative update. Once a lively centre for a family of five, the house had lost its vibrancy over time, settling into a bland, uninspired state. With the children now pursuing their own paths, the homeowners decided it was time to transition from the old to a more sophisticated, adult-friendly environment.
The mission for Stylesmiths Interior Designers was clear: banish the beige, infuse vibrant colours and textures, and create cosy, inviting spaces. One homeowner, an enthusiastic entertainer, envisioned a kitchen that balanced functionality with luxury.
The renovation dramatically redefined the home’s interior design across both floors, blending ‘Brady Bunch’ charm with the celebrated style of architect Alistair Knox. This eclectic design drew inspiration from the 1970s Eltham aesthetic, known for its use of recycled materials and mud bricks. The result is a home brimming with character and charm, moving far beyond typical suburban designs. Earthy greens, brushed brass, walnut veneers, and micro cement were skillfully combined to create a sophisticated yet cosy atmosphere. The main fireplace, finished with rustic ‘brick effect’ tiles, pays tribute to Knox’s iconic brickwork.
Upon entering, you’re greeted by a living space that envelops you in rich textures, earthy tones, and vibrant hues. A sumptuous caramel-toned sectional sofa serves as a warm, inviting foundation. The striking mustard armchair adds a bold pop of colour, offering a playful contrast while maintaining harmony with the room’s overall design. A trio of sleek, black nesting coffee tables functions as both a stylish centrepiece and a practical addition. A minimalist tripod floor lamp with a brushed brass finish casts a warm glow, enhancing the room’s inviting feel. A large, framed photograph of a misty landscape adds a touch of serene artistry, complementing the tranquil atmosphere of the home.
In the kitchen interior design, rich, warm wood and deep, earthy green cabinetry blend seamlessly. The natural wood finish, with its intricate grain patterns and smooth texture, radiates warmth, contrasting beautifully with the sleek, dark countertops. The earthy green cabinetry infuses the space with organic sophistication, evoking lush landscapes. The dark, textured stone countertops are both practical and stylish, framing the kitchen island and blending with walnut cabinetry and serene green walls. A cleverly hidden butler’s pantry behind the walnut cabinetry maintains a continuous flow and evokes nostalgic memories of secret hideaways. Minimalist brushed brass hardware adds a refined touch, enhancing the space’s contemporary edge while reflecting light and depth.
The open-plan living area serves as a perfect venue for entertaining. The olive-green sofa exudes cozy elegance, complemented by rust-colored armchairs that add a splash of color and flair. A central black coffee table with a raw, organic design balances the sleek lines of the surrounding furniture, echoing the kitchen’s stone countertops. The space is further illuminated by a large, perforated brass floor lamp that adds a luxurious touch while maintaining the room’s earthy charm. Above the fireplace, an abstract artwork with deep blues, oranges, and greens injects modern energy, while rustic tiles surrounding the fireplace add texture and depth.
The dining space, seamlessly integrated with the kitchen and living area, reflects contemporary design harmonizing with natural beauty. Earthy green walls provide a calm backdrop, enhancing the connection to the lush outdoor scenery.
The master bedroom is a sanctuary of luxury and earthy elegance. Stunning wooden panelling behind the bed extends across the wall, creating a warm, natural beauty. The light oak finish of the panels doubles as a walk-in wardrobe, offering both structure and sophistication. The room’s muted, warm colour palette features a terracotta accent wall, complemented by a burnt orange quilted blanket and rust-hued throw pillows flow seamlessly into the master ensuite bathroom interior design. Spherical pendant lights with frosted glass add a gentle glow, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.
A former child’s bedroom has evolved into a sophisticated retreat, reflecting a transition from playful childhood to refined adolescence. Deep forest green walls provide a dramatic contrast to rich wooden tones, while the built-in wardrobe with its warm walnut finish and sleek brass handles adds a mid-century modern touch. The bedside table, paired with a modern lamp and deep terracotta panelling, contributes to the room’s layered aesthetic and elegant ambiance.
